Charles A. Johnson
Owner & Master Barber

Charles A. Johnson has been a fixture in the Blacksburg community for decades. Born in 1933 in the Wake Forest community, Mr. Johnson began cutting hair in 1952 at Christiansburg Institute.
After serving as a Military Policeman during the Korean War, he joined Virginia Tech's campus barbershop in 1956. In the early 1960s, he made history by integrating Virginia Tech's barbershop—years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
For over 40 years, Mr. Johnson served as the official barber for Virginia Tech's Corps of Cadets. In 1974, he opened one of Blacksburg's first Black-owned barbershops. Today, at 92 years old, he still actively cuts hair and even makes house calls for customers who cannot travel.
In 2023, he received the Rotary Club Professional Leadership Award for his decades of community service.
